The decision to have a bagpiper at a funeral is a very personal one and can be made for a variety of reasons, There can be no doubt however that bagpipes have historically played a big part in Scottish funerals for many years. Very often, the hearse will be piped into the crematorium, church or graveside (traditionally referred to as ‘paging’) and thereafter, it is quite usual for the coffin to enter to the sound of bagpipe music. Piping at the time of committal/interment and afterwards as mourners disperse are also common requests. One or all of these suggestions can be incorporated depending on wishes.
