I can’t believe that in two weeks time rehearsals will begin again for the summer show at Prestonfield and that my previous news post here was in January! With February remaining true to form as the quietest month of the piper’s year, March was very busy and from now on in for the next seven months or so, things are full on for myself and the other Pickled Pipers.

On that note, I am delighted to welcome Ryan Faulds to the Pickled stable and will be posting a photo of him in the gallery very soon. Ryan is an extremely talented young piper who previously served with the Royal Regiment of Scotland where he also passed the prestigious Pipe Major’s course and examination. Over the past two years or so he has been competing with the Grade 1 Lothian and Borders Police Pipe Band.

From a business perspective, I am delighted to have retained a number of corporate clients from previous years and to have secured a number of new clients. Weddings remain our core business of course and it continues to be both a privilege and a pleasure to be a part of so many couple’s big day.

As The Pickled Piper grows and grows I am delighted to report that the current level of 2012 bookings far exceeds anything that has gone before. Between Paul, David and my other piper friends however I know that we will always be in a position to offer the very best service to the many weddings and events we are asked to provide for. Whether you need a piper for your wedding in Edinburgh, a bagpiper for your event in Glasgow or a splash of tartan and bagpipes for a TV show, you are in safe hands.

January is always a busy month for engagements and then February and March ease off a little. This is balanced however by the fact that the first three months of the year are the real biggies in terms of enquiries received.

The big news however (yes you heard it here first) is the forthcoming launch of my sister web site offering a range of the very best of Scottish musical entertainment, including ceilidh band, fiddler, string quartette, pianist, and tutored whisky tasting. This new arm of the business has grown organically from the many musicial friends and contacts with whom I have worked in and around Edinburgh over the years and the goodwill and trust established with many quality venues across Scotland. The name has still to be finally decided upon but watch this space for some more news shortly.

The day before, I had been at Edinburgh Zoo with pipers and drummers in place to welcome Edinburgh’s now famous new arrival in the form of the two Pandas from China. A great day had by all.

The rest of the month sees some Festive weddings lined up and a number of Pickled Pipers booked out for Hogmanay, with 2012 shaping up to be a huge year. Why not follow on Facebook or Twitter if you would like to follow our goings on.

After a fantastically busy and rewarding summer, The Pickled Piper’s thoughts have turned to next years wedding and events and it was such fun to meet so many brides and grooms to be at this weekend’s wedding fare at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. The opportunity to get to know fellow wedding suppliers was also really valuable. Thanks go particularly to my piping friend and Pickled Piper colleague Paul Selwood for being there with me over both days. Immediately following this blog update I have the eye crossing task of responding to fifty odd enquiries, but what a great challenge to have. The diary (including 2013!) is really filling up now at so many exciting locations. I do have a number of first class pipers on whom I can call and if Paul, David and I are all booked up for a certain date, I am very rarely stuck in being able to offer clients another first class piper resplendent in full ceremonial dress. OK, kettle boiled, motivation high, time to get going with all these replies.

Earlier this month I had a ball as I spent a couple of evenings behind the scenes at the Edinburgh Tattoo. I got chatting with some young Scots Guards pipers and shared some of my own memories of my last Tattoo 26 years ago when I had the honour of being the lone piper. Realisation dawned when they told me that none of them were born then. To me, it seems like yesterday.

I felt full of youthful vigor the following week however as I sat and sipped a cup of tea in the vestry of Pitlochry Parish Church as I waited on that day’s bride and groom reappearing. Despite being over 26, I reflected on the fact that this piper still leads a pretty crazy rock and roll lifestyle and decided that there was time for one more digestive before heading out again.

What a busy summer it has been so far! (that’s not a complaint) Aside from the core business of weddings and events I have now got a grip of Facebook and Twitter which I hope has brought The Pickled Piper to a wider audience. Looking ahead, I will be joined by Paul and David at the Corn Exchange Wedding Fayre on 4/5 November in Edinburgh following the previous one in March. Bookings for 2012 are already at levels I have not seen before.

In promoting the business in this way, I hope that potential customers will see an established, reliable and thoroughly professional business which in turn will give them the confidence to book their wedding or event piper through me. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of pipers offering their services to the market in the last couple of years. Like all services there is a variety of standards out there and some have come and gone already. It does however drive me to ensure that The Pickled Piper continues to provide the very best of service, from that very first enquiry right through to the day itself.

In the short term however, it’s been a great week. In the space of seven days there has been bookings at Prestonfield House, Traquair House, Melville Castle, Dryburgh Abbey Hotel, Leapark Hotel, Grangemouth and Glenskirlie Castle Hotel. Great venues, great people and great fun!

Having just watched on TV the pipe band of the Scots Guards (my old Regiment) on the lawn of Buckingham Palace welcoming The President of the USA I was delighted to take a phone call from my friend Mark McRae of that very band, just fresh from the event itself. Pipers now off to prepare for state banquet tonight. It’s great to see the Scots Guards pipers back in London and playing such a big part in ceremonial life there. Mr Obama will return home with the sound of bagpipes ringing in his ears !

PS Mark has secured me two tickets for Trooping the Colour in June. Fantastic.
